The halfway stage and I'm disappointed to have fallen so far behind the playoff places.

Need to work out how to get back to our early-season form.

Making a note of these Brexit rule changes for when I eventually (hopefully) end up managing in the Prem one day.

Seems okay and not massively different from the existing rule of max. 17 non-homegrown players.

It's now time for the winter break (which, unsurprisingly, is just as long in Russia as it is in Denmark), but things are feeling much more positive. At the halfway stage we were seven points behind the playoffs, but five games later (W4 D1 L0 / GF 10 GA 2) we're only four points off the top of the table.

What makes this so satisfying is that our form has improved because I've actually done something. For the first time since I started playing FM in 2010 I'm not just essentially making random changes I don't understand until something seems to work, I'm taking the time to read up on my opponents pre-match and choose my tactics accordingly. I've been paying particular attention to whether my opponents score a lot from either crosses or through balls, and it's seen a return of the solid defence that characterised our early matches this season.

I'm also watching matches in a little bit more detail, allowing me to keep more of an eye on what is and isn't working tactically, and the whole thing is making for a more enjoyable experience; the matches themselves are actually fun rather than just being something I have to get through to be able to find my next job. Who knew.

We did briefly re-enter the playoff places, only to draw a game and drop back out, but now that I think I have some vague idea of how to maintain this form, our promotion push could be back on.

Delighted to announce I've signed a player called Andrey Shevchenko purely because his name is Andrey Shevchenko.

I noticed him playing against me in a mid-season friendly and promptly signed him. He's a decent enough prospect though, and I was slightly lacking in DM cover, so it's actually a sensible signing after all.

2nd March 2019

Our first competitive game back after the winter break will be the domestic cup quarter final against Spartak Moscow. One of my starting CBs, Gritsaenko, is suspended for this game, and in fact he's been suspended for all the cup matches I've played this season (this will be the fourth).

Curiosity piqued, I did some research and found that the incident he's suspended for occurred not last season but the season before, way back in 2016! This was before he'd even joined Fakel, and he was playing for Luch-Energiya in the 2016/17 Fifth Round.

As well as the four he's been suspended for this season, he would have missed one additional cup tie last season. Unfortunately I can't find out what he did to earn himself this megaban. But looking at the competition disciplinary rules, I hope he's actually halfway through a ten-game ban for smacking a linesman.

We came very close to another huge upset but lost out to Spartak Moscow in extra time.

Gave it an admirable go and I'd say in the first hour or so we were the better side.

Having dropped only two points in seven league games since I started doing tactics properly...

...we have climbed into the automatic promotion places.

Zinin is tearing it up down that left side.

Still nine games to go, but our tenth straight unbeaten league game (W8, D2) and our fourth 3-0 in five matches has seen us go top on goal difference. Stupidly tight top half of the table though so mustn't get carried away!

Our next game will be 2nd-placed Tosno away...
